Pair of Antique French Gilt Gesso Picture Frames – Napoleon III Era c.1850–1900 – Ornate Oval Portrait Frames
Description:
This exceptional pair of matching antique picture frames dates back approximately 160 years, to the Napoleon III era (c.1850–1900). Handcrafted in France, these opulent frames are made from wood with thick, gilded gesso ornamentation, featuring intricate scrolls, floral details, and raised embellishments typical of Victorian decorative arts.
Each frame is designed to hold an oval portrait or image, making them ideal for antique photographs, religious icons, or as standalone wall art. Their deep profiles and scalloped edges add a sense of grandeur, while the timeworn patina tells a story of age and authenticity.
They’re true antiques – not reproductions – and display visible wear and cracks, consistent with their age. Some minor gesso loss is present, but they remain structurally solid and full of character.
